Endodontic therapy / Root canal treatment

Endodontic therapy / Root canal treatment

Endodontic treatment, also known as root canal therapy, is a dental procedure that aims to save and restore a severely damaged or decayed tooth. The procedure involves removing the infected or damaged pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then sealing it to prevent further infection.

Root canal treatment is a multi-step process performed by a dentist or endodontist.

Endodontic treatment steps:

  • Initial examination: clinical and radiographic to evaluate the lesion
  • Local anaesthesia
  • Isolation of the tooth
  • Opening access to the pulp chamber and root canals
  • Pulp/nerve removal
  • Cleaning and disinfection to remove any remaining bacteria
  • Filling of the root canals with a biocompatible material to prevent recontamination
  • Sealing the access opening with a temporary or permanent sealant to protect the tooth
  • Restoration, this may include the placement of a crown or other restoration to strengthen and protect the tooth
  • Follow-up visits, to monitor the healing process and ensure that the tooth is fully restored.

It is important to note that the actual process may vary depending on the complexity of the case. A well-done endodontic treatment can save a severely damaged tooth, relieving pain and allowing the natural smile to be preserved.
