Prevention

Preventing dental problems in paediatric patients involves a combination of good oral hygiene guidelines, a balanced diet, regular dental check-ups and education for both parents and children.

Key aspects of preventive care for pediatric dental health:

  • Early dental care: schedule the first dental visit shortly after the first tooth emerges
  • Establish oral hygiene habits: teach children good oral hygiene habits, such as regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing
  • Supervise brushing: by age 6 or 7 years, parents should supervise and assist with brushing
  • Balanced diet: with limited sugary snacks and drinks
  • Fluoride: helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay
  • Sealants: dental preventive fillings, applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars to prevent caries in hard-to-reach crevices
  • Regular dental check-ups: usually every six months or annually depending on the child's needs to identify problems early and provide preventative treatments such as cleanings and fluoride applications.
  • Orthodontic evaluation: around age 7 for early detection of orthodontic problems
  • Protective splints: If the child is involved in sports, protect his teeth and mouth from injury

By focusing on these preventative measures, parents and dentists can work together to ensure optimal oral health for pediatric patients, setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
